Brief Histories - Czechoslovakia

The book offers a clear history of country that changed much in the Twentieth Century.

Located at the heart of Europe between east and west, Czechoslovakia was the pivot of twentieth-century European history.

Created in 1918 out of the ruins of an empire, it remained a beacon of democracy in a continent darkened by fascism and communism.

But unable to resist the machinations of greater powers, it succumbed to Nazi invasion and partition on the eve of World War II.

After that conflict it underwent a communist dictatorship, which was lightened only briefly by the Prague Spring of 1968.

Finally, the Czechs and Slovaks reclaimed liberty and democracy in the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

Maria Dowling's history of Czechoslovakia engages with themes of perennial interest - nationalism, democracy, and authoritarian rule - and as well as guiding the reader through the particularly rich and varied experiences of Czechoslovakia, illuminates the nature of government, power, and culture in twentieth-century Europe.

Boosting Your Pet's Self-esteem
Or ... How To Have A Self-Actualized, Addiction-Free, Non-Co-Dependant Animal Companion

Illustrated by Sarah Buell Dowling

Humourous book published by Howell in 1997.  86 pages.

What you are about to read in this book may shock you. The revelations disclosed are probably new to you because hitherto the government, in a conspiracy with the liberal left and the radical right, has attempted to suppress them.

For the past decade the author has led a team of eminent pet psychologists in a top-secret research study. Findings conclusively show that millions of our nation's pets are not living up to their full animal potential because they suffer from low self-esteem. Perhaps you believe that the majority of pets have healthy self images. You may even think most pet behaviors seem pretty normal - but appearances are deceiving! For example:

Not long ago, the author and his dog Percy visited a friend, John. John has several pets. He adores them and often shows photos of them to anyone who stands still long enough. Imagine, then, the shock when every one of John's animals exhibited signs of low self esteem! John's dog immediately came over to us, wagging his tail and sending indirect signals that he would like to be petted. He obviously had a deep need for approval that manifested itself in people-pleasing behavior! To make matters worse, he was anal-compulsive around Percy . .
