"According to a family tradition the progenitor of the Dowlings of Ballyroan was a Castilian called Don Vincenza Dolinghos, a surgeon in the Spanish service who settled in Ballyroan, Queen's County, Ireland, during the reign of James II (1685-88). A descendant, presumably a grandson, Vincent Dowling, (called Vincent the elder in this book) married Mary Whelan of Maryborough, Queen's County, related to the Fitzgerald (later Lord Fitzgerald and Vesey) family, and had one son, Vincent (Vincent the younger)."

"Vincent DOWLING, b. 1756 in Queen's County (now Laoighis, Laois, or Leix), Province of Leinster, Ireland; journalist; was educated for the Irish bar and began his working life in Dublin. Moved to London in 1780; was for several years manager of the British Library at 132 Strand, and was involved in publishing The World, and Fashionable Advertiser from its inception on I Jan. 1787 at the paper's commercial office in Exeter Change, Strand. Returned to Dublin in 1789, and during the period 1790-1800 was variously described as a print-seller and perfumer, printer, coffee-house-keeper, stationer, bookseller, editor and publisher. He opened the Apollo Library at 13 Suffolk St in 1792, and later The Dublin Registry and Militia Exemption Office, moving in Sept. the following year to 21 Suffolk St, from where he also published The Oracle; or, Sunday Gazette, 4 Sept. 1796 to 30 Apr. 1797. He took a lease on 5 College Green on 17 Sept. 1798 and moved his library there. On 22 Nov. 1799 he sub-leased the office and library though retaining some of the former for his writing and publishing activities. He reported debates in the Irish parliament, and was the publisher, editor and principal author of a satirical periodical on it entitled Proceedings and Debates of the Parliament of Pimlico, Nos 1-28,1799-1800, and its sequel The Olio, or, Anything-arian Miscellany, Nos 1-6, 26 Mar. to 12 Apr. 1800; wrote numerous political broadside ballads and jeux d'esprit against the impending Union with Britain. On 26 Aug. 1800 both his own lease and the sub-lease were terminated, and during that month he took his family to London, where he was listed as a bookseller and patent medicine vendor at 30 Lincoln's Inn Fields 1804-07. He was for many years a parliamentary reporter and contributed to The Times and other periodicals, residing at Bell's Buildings, Salisbury Square, and from about 1809, at 10 Trafalgar Place, Kentish Town, Middlesex.

m. 1783 in England, Elizabeth, eldest dau. of Joseph ANDREWS of Burton-on-Trent from an old Saxon family, a merchant and ship owner in the Russian trade. The family on her mother's side were merchants in Yorkshire named HICKSON, and one of her forbears was reputedly a captain in the Royal Navy who was serving at the time of the Spanish Armada (1588).

d. 29 Mar. 1825 at Kentish Town, Middlesex, and was interred at St Martin's Burial Ground, Camden Town, having by her, who d. 28 July 1836 at Ambleside, Westmorland, aged 76, had ten children"

Dowling, Vincent George (1785-1852) journalist, elder brother of Sir James Dowling [q.v.], was born in London in 1785 and received his earlier education in Ireland. He returned to London with his father after the union in 1801, and occasional assisted his duties in connection with the "Times". Soon after he engaged with the "Star", and in 1809 transferred his services to the "Day" newspaper.

In 1804 he became a contributor to the "Observer" thus commencing his acquaintance with William Innell Clement which continued until Clement's death 24 Jan 1852. Dowling was appointed as editor of "Bell's Life" in August 1824, in which position he continued until his death.

He was present in the lobby of the House of Commons when Bellingham shot Spencer Perceval, on 11 May 1812 and was one of the first persons to seize the murderer, from whose pocket he took a loaded pistol.
