Dowling & Similar Statistics: Death

Registered Age at Death chart for 1864 to 1869

Death Statistics

Centenarians

The following charts are based on all the deaths of Dowlings and similar (not 'soundex') registered in the Irish civil index from when the index started in 1864 to 1869. The analysis comes from my database of the death index which is held on a Microsoft Access database with the data analysed in Microsoft Excel.

This chart shows the spread of age at death as stated by the 'informant' for registration. Whilst it is 'generally' accurate the chart shows that reliance on the age stated, for example to determine birthdate, is inadvisable. If you look at the peaks they are at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 a very unlikely mortality trend. This means that when the Registrar asked for the age of the deceased the informant did not know exactly and said something like, "about 60" or , "in his sixties". However the trend line (yellow) help to show the more likely trends with the peak in the 50's. The table below show gives the various 'means'.

The above table shows that, as one might expect, that as time progresses people live longer. The striking change in the eighteen seventies was that providing children did not die at birth (age 0) they most commonly live until they are 70 years old. Compared to this in the eighteen sixties they would die as babies aged 1 year old.
