Geographical Spread of Dowlings & Similar (not 'soundex') Information taken from Irish Civil Births Registration Index (3102 records). What this tells you is that if you do not know where to start looking for your Dowling relatives you will find more to choose from in Dublin and Kilkenny. The Northern Ireland counties are only sparsely populated with Dowlings and NI shows high above because the utility I used for this map will not separate the five counties. I apologise to those in Northern Ireland but you can still see where the NI counties sit in the bar chart below. (PS. if you know of a better Ireland map for use with Microsoft Excel please let me know).
