This appears to be a guide
only and different families followed it only as much as they
wanted to. Therefore, do not use the system to identify the
next ancestor as your family may have ignored it!
The system is out of fashion now and its
origins are uncertain. Its use makes Irish genealogy more
difficult as it can be hard to distinguish individuals in
different branches of a family.
