Hand Painted Ashtrays

This is a pair of hand painted "ashtrays" Actually I don't think they were used as ashtrays and I don't think anyone would want to use them as such because they are too pretty.

Each of them are painted with a pair of birds, one in blue and the other in dark red. I am not positive, but I do believe the signature is Dowling.

They are both trimmed in heavy gold and each have handles. The total width of each of them, including the handle is 6 1/2" There are no markings on the bottom, just a tiny pinhole at the area the handle opens into the dish.

Dowling College Ware
Dowling is a College on Long Island, N.Y.   These pieces must have been given at some sort of award ceremony.  The large one seems to be a Tobacco Jar, and the smaller one clearly is marked Dowling College, must have been meant to be either a desk pen or pencil holder, as I would not think it was meant to be used as a glass. Believed to be from the 70's if not earlier.
