There were three Afghan Wars in total where Great Britain, used its military resources in India in an attempt to extend its control over Afghanistan.  
The main trigger for this campaign was increasing influence by the Russians from the north over Afghan affairs.  Although never able to take total control of Afghanistan Britain did manage to control its foreign affairs until Afghan Independence in 1921.
