American Civil War 1861 to 1865

Here are some soldiers who fought on the side of the Confederacy

John E Dooley fought at Gettysburg on the side of the Confederacy as a member of the 1st Virginia Infantry, Kempes Brigade.  He was born to a socially prominent Richmond Household, the son of an Irish immigrant.  In 1862 John E left Georgetown College in Columbia to join the elite 1st Virginias.

John Dowling Dowling, born 4th December 1845, Ringgold, Walker County (now Catoosa) Georgia, USA; died on 29th May 1937, Rome, Floyd Co., Georgia.
He enlisted in Company E.1st Confederate Regiment, Georgia Volunteers, at Fort Gaines garrison. In January 1864, he took part in the battle of Rocky Face and went through the Atlanta campaign.  He was in the battle of Franklin, and was by the side of Colonel Smith when he fell.  He was among the few who went over the breastworks in the charge.  

John went between the lines to rescue his company's colors.  Three had fallen in the attempt.  He was in the battle of Nashville and was captured December 16, 1864, sent to Camp Douglas, IL., and was released June, 1865.
