American Civil War 
1861 to 1865

Dramatic conflict, sometimes between members of the same families, filled the four years between 1861 and 1865 as the 23 Northern States of the Union battled with the 11 Southern states called the Confederacy.

The Confederacy had split from the Union to follow its own doctrines and self-determination but eventually capitulated following progressive weakening after the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.
