| Enlisted/attested at Liverpool 11/13 Jun 1837 for
unlimited service in the East India Company's Artillery.
He was then described as:
Joined the EIC recruit depot at Brompton Barracks, Chatham, 26 Jun 1837 and was there allocated to Bengal. Embarked for India on the 'Cornwall' 8 Aug 1837. Arrived at Calcutta 17 Dec 1837. Posted as Gunner, 1st Troop 3rd Brigade Bengal Horse Artillery. Transferred to the Bengal Unattached List as a Sergeant 11 Apr 1849. Muster rolls 1859 listed as 397 Regimental Sergeant-Major, 4th Bengal European Light Cavalry. Discharged to a pension of 2s 6d per day, payable in the UK - GGO 673 of 12 May 1859. [India Office Records: L/MIL/9/31 Artillery Recruits 1831-38; L/MIL/10/22 Bengal European Soldiers 1793-1839; L/MIL/10/181 Bengal Musters 1859] The only extant Mutiny Medal roll for the 4th Bengal Eur Lt Cav lists the names of 22 officers only. He is not included. The rolls for Sutlej and the Punjab for the 3rd Bgde Bengal Horse Art do not include his name in any rank. No trace of an MSM or LSGC.
