I have been busy getting my scraps of paper in order and entering my notes into my new genealogy program (Generations). I guess one never gets it all organized, but I have started to work on my husband's line again (O'Shea and Dowling). To refresh your memory -- my mother-in-law, Anastasia Dowling (O'Shea) was born in Balleen Lower, Freshford, on February 22, 1900. Her father was Richard Dowling and mother was Anne Kelly. I believe her father was Richard Dowling Born February 7, 1872 -- father James Dowling and mother Catherine Holland -- although I am not sure of this. I recently found that Anastasia's family attended St. Bridget's Church in Lisdowney, Co. Kilkenny -- which is near Balleen Lower. I also know that her brother, Joseph Dowling, died Ja.

I'm still trying to track down Richard Dowling's birth certificate. His marriage certificate states he was of legal age -- does that mean 21 or 18? - Rita.
How can I possibly thank you!! There is a lot of information to digest. I have been reading the Irish Times site information about the difference between the civil districts and the Catholic parishes.
I received a scanner and genealogy software for Christmas and have started to try to organize all the scraps of paper and URL's I've assembled into some sort of system. The paper piles very quickly! I have started my search on my side of the family and have been busy sending for documents in the U.S. Now I want to try to gather some information on the O'Shea/Dowling line.
You must be correct about Urlingford-I have Anastasia's birth registration in front of me now and it states the birth was registered in the district of Balleen in the Superintendent Registrar's District of Urlingford. Her mother was Anne Kelly. I know that somewhere I have a hand-written note about my mother-in-law's siblings-just haven't found it yet. I've found several of these notes written on paper napkins, backs of envelopes, etc. Even before I started to formally search something told me to jot down little bits of information. My New Year's resolution was to organize all my paperwork!! The good news is that since January I have labeled all the framed photographs-the bad news is I have two cartons of photographs to finish!
I'll be away until next week but when I get back I plan to really dig into the Dowling line and I certainly will keep in touch with you.
One additional item-in 1992 my husband and I traveled to Kilkenny and were wandering around Freshford and could not find the area where his mother was born-so we just decided to stop at a house and ask-we rang a doorbell and a lovely lady named Mrs. Nolan invited us in and telephoned her mother who had lived in the area all her life. Her mother came over and we discovered she knew the family and in fact remembered my mother-in-law. Can you believe Providence had directed us to the small dairy farm where Anastasia and her father had worked? I had listened to the stories about this little farm and how she had milked the cows, etc. Somehow although she had discribed it very clearly to me, she never mentioned one item that was startling to me-there was a castle ruin in the front yard!! The house we stopped at was a B&B called "Castle View" owned by Bridget Nolan. I found a site under accomodations in Co. Kilkenny that has a picture of the house and printed a copy to put in the binder I'm assembling for my children.
Again, thank you-I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you. If I become a pest just tell me-
      Thanks,
      Rita O'Shea
