O'Dubhlaoidh: Before the English invasion of Ireland the family O'Dubhlaoidh was driven from 'Feara Tulagh' (i.e. Viri Collium), now in the Barony of Fertullagh in the County of Westmeath by the family O'Melaghlin and they settled in Ely O'Carroll. The O'Dowling (or O'Dunlaing) portion of the family were Chiefs in the County of Wicklow and in the Queen's County. -Source: O'Donovan. (Irish Pedigrees or The Origin and Stem of The Irish Nation by James O'Hart published in 1892 by James Duffy & Co. Ltd. Dublin). Originally, Leinster stretched northwards to the Boyne but the land between it and the Liffey was lost to the advancing Ui Neill. The heartland of historic Leinster was the vale of the Liffey, and the valleys of the Barrow and the Slaney. The great dynasties, the winners, were in the plains and river valleys; the losers were on the eastern coastal strip, the Wicklow highlands, and the north-western boglands. In the eighth century Leinster was ruled by the Ui Dunlainge, a group of dynasties settled in the vale of the Liffey and in the plains of Kildare. They were new men: the annals and genealogies show that other groups-whom they had pushed out into the badlands-had held kingship before them. The Ui Dunlainge allied themselves closely with the great church of Kildare in a mutual profit venture. They had other rivals to the south of them: Ui Chennselaig, who had threatened the vale of the Liffey in the seventh century-but were foiled and pushed south, where they carved out an important kingdom for themselves in association with Ferns and a number of other monasteries. ( The Oxford Illustrated History of Ireland edited by R F Foster - Oxford University Press 1989). "Ui" means descendants of. This is a plural form (also often shown as 'Hy') and denotes the clan, sept or whole body of descendants. Child of FELIM DOWLING is:

Notes for KING OF LEINSTER BRANDUBH DOWLING: Brandubh, son of Eochaidh. The 10th Christian King of Leinster from 594 AD. (Irish Pedigrees or The Origin and Stem of The Irish Nation by James O'Hart published in 1892 by James Duffy & Co. Ltd. Dublin). His story is told in "Gein Branduib and Aidain" and in the "Boruma". Cummine is very probably the Queen mentioned in the latter on whose account Brandubh slew the arrogant Cumascach and fought and vanquished the Ui Neill. (Women of the Ui Dunlaing, Margaret E Dobbs. - Irish Genealogist) Brandubh. A King of Leinster. The Annals of Ulster say he died in AD604. His father was Eochaidh of Leinster and his mother was Feildem (Feldelma). She gave birth to twin boys but exchanged one of them with the twin daughters of King Aidan of Alba. Her remaining son, Brandubh, grew up to become king. He was a good friend of Mongan of the Dal nAraidi but coveted Mongan's wife, Dubh Lacha. He tricked Mongan into giving him Dubh Lacha although Mongan, the son of Mananna Mac Lir, used his magic powers to get her back. (This tale is told in Toraigheacht Duibhe Lacha (The Rescue of Dubh Lacha)). Brandubh treacherously slew the son of the High King Aedh and Aedh made war on him. Brandubh sent a spy to kill Aedh but was later slain by Saran. A Christian embellishment has Brandubh raised from the dead by a miracle. ("A Dictionary of Irish Mythology" - Peter Berresford Ellis. Oxford University Press (1991)) NB. Brandubh. A board game played by the heroes of the gods. The name signifies "Black Raven". It seems similar to 'fidchell'. There have been several archaeological finds of board games in Celtic graves. A wooden board with sockets for movable pegs was found in Ballinderry, County Westmeath, Ireland.
