She was born 460 in Ireland, and died 500 in Ireland.
Notes for DUNLANG
O'TOOLE-NO.1:
Dunlong or Dunlang, Son of Enna Niadh. This Dunlong slew the Royal
Maidens at the Claenfert of Tara, in revenge of which twelve Leinster
Princes were slain, and Boromha tribute exacted. (Irish Pedigrees or The
Origin and Stem of The Irish Nation by James O'Hart published in 1892 by
James Duffy & Co. Ltd. Dublin).
Notes for CUACH:
Cuach, daughter of Coulub, etc., of the Ui Bairrche of Mach Ailbe, was
mother of Dunlang's three sons: Illann, Ailill, Eochaid. Hence was said
"Cuach's three leaps in Gabair" each time she bore one of the
afforesaid sons. Three forts were given her after them viz.: Magen (Daingen)
Garbain, Achad Dairig, Tilach Ui mBlait. She granted those three forts to
her brother, Coeman Santlethan (Airne). These sites can no longer be
identified but were in Gabair.
Cuach's family may be the same as the "hU Cellaig do hUib Briuin
doib, hU (C)ellaig i mmaigh o chenel nUcha la hI Bairrche." It is worth
noting that the Ui Bairrchi and the Ui Dunlainge were not far from the
district where tradition placed Palladius' mission and the first landing of
St. Patrick. The story of Ciaram of Saighir asserts there were Christians in
Ossory before Patrick. Cuach and Coeman may represent these earliest
converts. Her sons apparently were not baptized till middle life.

O'Dubhlaoidh: Before the English invasion of Ireland the family
O'Dubhlaoidh was driven from 'Feara Tulagh' (i.e. Viri Collium), now in
the Barony of Fertullagh in the County of Westmeath by the family
O'Melaghlin and they settled in Ely O'Carroll. The O'Dowling (or
O'Dunlaing) portion of the family were Chiefs in the County of Wicklow
and in the Queen's County. -Source: O'Donovan. (Irish Pedigrees or The
Origin and Stem of The Irish Nation by James O'Hart published in 1892 by
James Duffy & Co. Ltd. Dublin).
Originally, Leinster stretched northwards to the Boyne but the land
between it and the Liffey was lost to the advancing Ui Neill. The
heartland of historic Leinster was the vale of the Liffey, and the
valleys of the Barrow and the Slaney. The great dynasties, the winners,
were in the plains and river valleys; the losers were on the eastern
coastal strip, the Wicklow highlands, and the north-western boglands. In
the eighth century Leinster was ruled by the Ui Dunlainge, a group of
dynasties settled in the vale of the Liffey and in the plains of
Kildare. They were new men: the annals and genealogies show that other
groups-whom they had pushed out into the badlands-had held kingship
before them. The Ui Dunlainge allied themselves closely with the great
church of Kildare in a mutual profit venture. They had other rivals to
the south of them: Ui Chennselaig, who had threatened the vale of the
Liffey in the seventh century-but were foiled and pushed south, where
they carved out an important kingdom for themselves in association with
Ferns and a number of other monasteries. ( The Oxford Illustrated
History of Ireland edited by R F Foster - Oxford University Press 1989).
"Ui" means descendants of. This is a plural form (also
often shown as 'Hy') and denotes the clan, sept or whole body of
descendants.

Notes for FAELAN:
Frequently called "foster-son of Coemgen" of Glendalough.
Thereby hangs a tale which is found in the Lives of St. Coemgen and also of
St. Berach, a Connaught man. He has no connection whatsoever to do with the
Ui Dunlainge. He is represented as on a visit to Coemgen when the events in
the story took place. Both Lives narrate that Faelan was placed as a small
child under Coemgen's protection against evil spirits, or against the hate
of a step-mother, Cainech. They both describe attempts on Faelan's life by
witchcraft and the death of the wicked step-mother. The story might well be
pure imagination, but the facts in the genealogies suggest a foundation of
truth. Feidhelm must have died circa 570-574 as Colman had another wife,
Cummine, before his death in 576. Faelan, judging by the date of his own
death, can only have been a baby at the time. It would have been natural for
Colman, seeing his wife's jealousy, to send the child, not merely to a
foster-father of the Ui Dunlainge, but to a great saint living in the
territory of Feidhelm's own family. This was a double protection. The danger
must have been very serious. It evidently impressed the public mind as the
compilers of St. Berech's Life included it as a principal item of his visit
to Coemgen. In the story the step-mother, Cainech, perishes at Coemgen's
command. In the genealogies of our text she is "Cumne" or "Cummine"
and lives to marry again. This did not point so good a moral and doubtless
the compiler of Coemgen's Life felt bound to improve on it. This however,
does not alter the fact that from two sources we can construct an incident
of Ui Dunlainge history. - Women of the Ui Dunlainge, Margaret E Dobbs.
