From the sixth century the Scotti or Scots, a warlike Celtic race from Northern Ireland, extended their north-eastern kingdom of Dalriada into what is now Argyll, Kintyre and teh neighbouring islands.

The arrival of the Irish Saint Colmcille (Columba) in Iona in 563AD was the start of a lengthy period of Irish missionary activity in Britain.
