Masc's Fort, Laois. The 200 ft
high Rock of Dunamase is the superb site of a dun or fort occupied by
a Leinster Chieftain in early Christian
times. This stronghold was later acquired by Strongbow through
his marriage to Eva MacMorough, and a mote
and bailey castle subsequently erected here was enlarged and
strengthened around 1250. - AA Touring Guide to Ireland (1976) |
