Clonenagh


Clonenagh and Clonagheen is the Roman Catholic Parish for the area of Mountrath. The graveyard is on the road out of Mountrath towards Dublin. On the windy Clonenagh Hill, near St. Fintan's Tree, there are three gravestones with text as follows:

HERE LYETH THE BODY
DANIEL DOWLING

DEPARTED THE 11TH DAY
JUNE 1749 AGED 23

HERE LYETH THE BODY OF
MARY DOWLING AND
PATRICK WHO DEPARTED
LIFE THE 1ST DAY OF SEPTEMBER
IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD
1760 AGED BY YEARS

Here lyeth the body of John
Dowling of Clonnard who
departed of his life March 9th
17_ _

The lord have mercy on these
here souls Amen

Here lyeth the body of
George Dowling who
Departed of his life the
10th Day of October 1765
Aged 44 years

Also here lyeth the
Body of his brother
William Dowling who
Departed this life the
8th Day October 1766
Aged 56 years
